Hello World,
Hope you are in peace with your creatures and plastics.
This week while restoring guest files from a deduplication-enabled Commvault backup of a virtual machine running on Windows 2012 or later, a file-level restore operation completes successfully but creates only stub files (0kb in size).
Commvault support recommended that the proxy/media agent used for restore has window de-duplication feature installed (using server manager). Once the deduplication feature was installed on the media agent and an additional setting (nEnforceLiveBrowse) was added to the media agent, the restore of files completed successfully. Happy days!
So next time you have this issue, enable windows deduplication on the media agent/proxy and configure the additional setting.
Rest in next,
Admin
